The STP Family

I remember the STP Family well! And it truly seems like only yesterday.

In the summer of 1970 in Boulder, Colorado this pack of ebullient, edgy, in-your-face hippies perfected the art of living on the outskirts of society. They were a hard-doping, hard-drinking, dumpster-diving, wheeling-and-dealing street theatre circus unto themselves. Talk about living close to the ground: The STP family brought the ground up to meet us.

Foolish to some, courageous to many, The STP Family lives in counterculture infamy. I was proud to have met many of them, particularly Deputy Dawg, RIP.

But don't take my word for it. Do your own research. The STP Family lives!

...and where can one find more info about the STP Family may I ask? I am interested.

Scant evidence exists surrounding the mythical STP family. Google it, and start following threads. You should find some history of the STP folks from NYC and SF, and more than a few nostalgia blogs.

I knew the Boulder family, and knew people from Boulder who knew of Deputy Dawg's execution. You will find flattering anecdotes, and scathing attacks, and not much in between.

I lived in Boulder in the mid-70s but they were gone by then and they were more of an urban legend.

There's not much on the internet about them though a few former members occasionally surface. Deputy Dawg's murderer confessed a few years back (late 90s). He was the Nederland sherriff.

Did you know the founder STP John?

I hung out with these guys for a long time. Went to jail, jumped freight trains, slept in vacant lots, caught lice, drank cheap wine for breakfast.

Was with them in Boulder CO, Berkeley CA, Austin TX, Tucson AZ, Portland OR and most notably New Orleans LA.

I knew 2 JJs (Puerto Rican JJ and just JJ), two Mad Dogs, Cracker Jack and Clyde, Rufus the Family Dog, Theresa and lots of others that don't spring to mind offhand.

I'd like to see some information on them but I have no wish to return to those insane days. I'm glad I survived relatively unscathed.

They were definitely real, for better or for worse.

YES , we were absolutely real ...

Gone by the mid-70s? Not quite, there are still some alive and well today, although most have died and none of the survivors still live on the streets. I grew up with them, after running away from home at 13 in 1973. They were more of a family to me then my birth family. I'm grateful to have reconnected with many of them.

I was born into the Boulder STP family in 71. My parents met in the NY group and we also joined the family in San Fran. I have fond memories despite some descriptions I have come across online. Perhaps the political revolution they craved lapsed into myth but the social bonds and alternative lifestyle were revolutionary in themselves.

Yes, they existed and many are still alive. Charlie Black Beard, LB, Bishop, Pig Pen, Cocaine Mike, "T", Buttons, Patty Rotten Crotch, Milan, Chipper, and many many more. Deputy Dawg had already passed when I hit the scene in Boulder. All good!

Well, to hell with being unreal about it. I knew Slim, met HB, was friends with Tom Rush, Pig Pen and Duffy, Rick & Dave the Gemini Twins, hung out with midget Jesse & was tight w/ PuertoRican JJ etc. I got initiated twice. Yes, people did get initiated. And it was not pretty. I am STP and I was aquainted with Young Jesse. I wasn't with the John days scene, the right after that scene in the early 70s coast to coast like a merry go round. I was the kid and I was Otis' friend, TC's friend, Birdy's friend. Bear's friend. I lived it. It was good, bad and ugly. But those of us who survived...are good people. We wewren't always back then because all we knew was the road, mountains , streets and surviaval. I knew Kenny Red Port, Asshole Dave, shit, I don't have to go on to prove shit. But if you are STP you know that I'm saying the real deal. So, I just want to say that if you're out there Tom Rush, I loved you very much and JJ, if you are still kicking, remember when my mom saved your life, and Rick and Dave, I love you wherever you are. And we're all good folks. We did live on the edge, but heck....oh well.

Kenny(red port) first called me STP-ROBBY.I saw many people die, many of us went to jail, for various lengths of time.WE drank and drank...i was in boulder when L.B.died,in Bazerkly when Mud died, lived in whitethorn when kenny left, and crib death took Arid and Connie's baby. And still we partied, and drank and drank!!!! And i wouldn't have it any other way. It cost me the woman i loved most,i spent a year in va hosp., having a heart failure. When i got out, i grabbed a bottle and a frieght to berkly, only to find my partner of many years (Bags, MR.ROBERT KAHN), had been murdered by a couple balless wonders.WE paid, but how we played!!!Everthing is..nothing is..everthing.I have my freedom, but i don't have much time, talk to me!!!stprobby69@yahoo.com

I was a young girl in New Mexico. We had those from the STP family and the MF family who lived with us from time to time in what I would loosely call a commune. They definitely existed!

nnillynI was with the family, more so with one of it's offshot tribes we called the Asshole Family, Asshole Dave, Rico, Rancid Randy, Sgt Peppers, NY Tommy, Jim and Mary Mitchell and others. This bunch wintered in Tuscon and hung in Himmel Park off Speedway. I am Redman and I led everyone to New Orleans for everyones first time in 1971. Word got out and from all over the country many affilliated with the family came on down. Mike Spike, the twins, Peppermint Patty, Little T, so many. It was a rough and tumble bunch. Very loose and carefree. Totally aimless. I got off the road for good in 1972 and wound up in the hills of Vt. when out of the blue I ran into two family members , one who was from southern Vt originally and was up at the border checking out the infamous Tuners Place in ST Albans where I hung out.

Mona with her then boyfriend, Steve and I shared an apartment together. We'd go out and panhandle
together sometimes.

Later on I hung out on the street with Jax, OJ, and Zap in NYC.

I wasn't Family, but I was close.

Hello...My name is Patti. The Summer of 1999 I held the First "STP FAMILY REUNION" at my place in Oklahoma. For years I had thought about it...finally with the help of the internet it happened. It took about 2 years to put it together. Many...more than I anticipated showed up. Also along with the reunion "Wab" and I were married. It was a beautiful wedding. Daisy Mae played the violin along with "Stinkin'Lincoln" playing the guitar...he was also our Minister. Sunshine brought me the wedding dress and made the cake. Candyman gave me away with CrackerJacks stood with Wab.
It was wild to see people that had shared such an experience as we did after all those years. For the most part everything went well.

The collaboration this thread has set in motion amazes me. There's obviously a strong desire among family to reconnect. How can we help?

I tried contacting some people a few years ago, no answer on the net, here goes though. Itchie richie here, is there anybody out there?????

¤Påttï§tårz¤ said...

IR...did you know about the STP Family Reunion in '99? Then...2000 there was another. Both were held on my land in Oklahoma.

Richie said...

No, I didn't. I did what a lot of family did. I moved to NM,(right next door practically),and pulled the sidewalk in after me . I don't think I can recall you unless you are Patty RC? I am new to blogging, I sent a response to you but I don't know if you got it?
Getting back in touch after all these years is kinda freaky...

I think I get it now. Responses only go through the blog site. Am I right? I tried sending Patty an e-mail using her blog name, that's why you didn't get it. How can I post pics on here? Anyways I'd really like to hear from family. I finally saw the wedding pics, with others, and the nostalgia is almost enough to make me wanna bawl...keep in touch

IR...Hi again. It is kinda cool to make contact, isn't it? I am not PattiRC...they called me "Mom" for the most part. In Tucson I had a corner apt. At the time I was with my "X" Hampton, my son was "Julian". In Berkeley I was a part of the "Berkeley Peoples Free Food Project". Ever get the privilege to dine there? The main people were...Fat Ed, Crazy Larry and Nature, Steve, Marlene and me. Later on came Blondy Mike and Black Haired Mike. I left there in '73 (?)... Also Major would come and help out. I usually parked my van next to the building for safety reasons and Major camped in the walk way beside the Free Food building. *lol* we were neighbors. Oh yah...we "Blog" here unless we decide to send private e-mails...which is ok with me. At the same time share a few memorieeeez here for the "Site to Remember"...bit of ho-down humor. Plz...keep in touch. Patti (*

Richie said...

do I send e-mails confidentially?
we used to get all of our messages from pay-phone, city to city. We would hear what was happening in Boulder when someone would call from the hill to the phone on Darant street in Berkeley. We were practically sending smoke signals back then but we new who was where, and what was happening.I will keep blogging, but I will want to connect privately too. How do I send,(get) pictures?

By the way, I was in Tuscon only once. Me, Cracker Jacks, and Gypsy(little gypsy, there were alot of 'em back then) slept on a rooftop, (with our dogs Wally, and Popcorn((guess which dog was CJ's?)) on our way to New Orleans from San Fransisco...that trip was a book in itself...I.R.

Patti, was that the free food church above Peoples Park on Hasting,(Haste, hasting?). If it is, yes we ate there all the time. One thing about Berkeley, you got fed good....we used to dine and dash Robbies alot, and I could eat about 3 Giant burgers at a time then..(younger with better metabolism...I was always way too skinny then, now, not so much....)
PS: I knew a Momma Bear???

Fat Ed wore glasses and always had on his leather patched originals...this is like the twilight zone...alot of boss memories out there, and a few not so....

WOW!!! I love your excitement...enthusiasm...it rocks!!! Ya know...my BEST, most LIVED time was when the streets were my home. hmmmm...never thought of this before but we had are landing pads too. Primarily I was a Berkeley person...others Tucson...Austin...Cuba...somewhere in Oregon. ....geeez I am getting tears in my eyes. I was so happy then...loved my friends with devotion...trust,nothing short on protecting each other. Little did I know that these events would pave a path to my future, I call it "Tales of My Trails". At 16 I hit the road in my van (called the "Patti-Wagon" by the way)the adventure was unexpected, undetermined destinations, meeting unknown people that grew into tight freindships in a matter of a few days. My first stop was Boulder where I met Lil'Bear, Mangy John and Muskrat. From there I met Deputy Dog, Ron Kelly, Beatrice and others. Originally from SanFrancisco it made sense to move on to California. Altho I liked SF I didn't love it so I hung in Berkeley...there I LOVED it all...the charactors, imaginations, stories,
"Trips"...all of it!!! Not soon after my arrival there I met Dennis, he was the caretaker of the Lutheran Church. He heard me bitching about the police busting panhandlers and ask if I wanted to help in this matter. This is when I became a main charactor at the Food Project, which, btw, was on Haste/Dwight Way. It took care of all my needs...food...shelter...being with people, providing and giving me a place to park my van. Marlene, Fat Ed and I met on Telegraph, became close...thus putting us together at the Food Project. To this day we are still close and in contact. We have remained friends thru some difficult journeys. And, yes Ed is the man w/the glasses and leathers. *lol* some of that work was mine. Ed and I lived together off and on (platonic). He came to Oklahoma to helpe build my house...so did CanyMan. Both were there when I kicked Hampton to the curb. During the building of our house...for our kids and all that goes with the looking into the future, he found a new love at the bar. They stayed with me to help finish out.
CandyMan stayed in Oklahoma with me, Ed returned to Berkeley but a year or two later Ed came back. We lived in the house for a couple of years. GAWD!!! there is so much!!! Ok...my e-mail is on my profile. Click on my name and should lead you there. If not, let me know and I will post it in our blogs. I am glad we connected. Oh yah!!! What are you doing now? Currently I am in Florida with my son Julian.
Waiting to hear back...(*

Just want to express my gratitude to the folks who manned (so to speak) the Berkeley Free Food Project (I think that's what it was called). I remember one time for dinner we had spaghetti with the choice of vegetable or meat sauce, and... here's the kicker... all the ice cream you could eat. Then back into the fray on the street. Berkeley was beyond insane. I stayed at a family house on the border between Berkeley and Oakland on Telegraph. Some really sick shit went down there. I was like this tourist who couldn't believe what I was witnessing.

wow just found this site and for all the brothers and sisters who I hung out with and are still above dirt I send my you my props!

Those of us who were there know who we r and if we have to prove it by naming names well I decline but i will talk about our experiances:

From Platt Valley to huffing glue under the park off apprahoe to MD 20 20 yes we drank!

We were the Buccineer ridge Runners and those who know what I mean know what I mean!

I too lived in the PV Cabin with my partner and our dogs after Sgt Pep who held the papers for the cabin told us to move in. We did and the two folks who were there at the time moved out!

Also tha Cave at the back of PV was a roof over the head at times up out of town.

We also ran with our DOGS too and Oly was mine and Gambril was my partners pup.

From Eddie Spaggities to the "secret spot on top of Tulogies Theatre/Club we ran on the hill.

Was there the riots happened and the bookstore lost ALL of its glass windows and the Pharmacy became open for the people!

When some went down to the Sangre De Cristos in NM some went to the "City" and to Berzerkly"

Stryder I know you and remember the garage across from the Hospital on Dwight way in Berzerkly.

Officer Chaistain used to make it a habit of trying to take us off the hill to the County/City Accomadations. Prostution and leud acts was his favorite when caught taking a piss behind the dumpster behind the orange juleius!

Was so so Glad when that Prick from Nederlands admitted to the Pushing pep into the shaft!

The upper road mountain road Vigilanties also came at us and that is where I lost two front teeth!

Came in and out of town many times and brought my sister out in the when things got bad for her back in the DC area she is now in Portland!

Actually was contacted by Candyman and also Nabor in the last few years and they are well

You did not wear an STP patch on your truckers but that became a thing to some as the early 70s came around.

Stp John was taken at the frat party but that was early on. The drinking hard was the real thing and then drinking some more and the Plattvalley was afforadable!

Damn at one time Sgt Pep even had credit at Canyon Liquor!! Now that was a trip!

Glad that I found this spot above dirt in the eather world!!

Today I am ww

Man I can say that when I was approached by the dude taking pics for his documentary book "telegraph after dark" I always declined but we did get him to feed us more than once! I think he did get a few of the street folks though to "tell their story to him!

Are you the people who used to wear the STP patches from the gas stations on your dungaree jackets.

Anonymous said...

STP is one of those hallucinogens like LSD, isn't it.

How did you get the name STP if you were all drinking all the time.

Cecil X. Nixxon said...

Lotsa family had those red STP oil treatment patches on their clothing. But yeah, it was about hallucinogens - not anti-knock formula :')

But to say all the STP family ever did was drink is not an accurate portrayal. Hallucinogens, various narcotics, plenty of smoke - and yes, said booze. It just seemed that they were all hard-ass drinkers because the "scene" at that time was characterized by less booze/more LSD.

And I recall the Jesus folks coming in and subverting a couple of family members in Boulder '70. Boy, were they ever evangelized!

contrario said...

Cecil,
I don't want to contradict the son, but I remember it differently. The patches and the drinking came later. At first there was the hallucinogens and just everyone knowing each other rather then having to wear a patch to identify themselves.

I don't understand, if you are a family, what is the difference between you and your children. Were you each other's mothers and fathers, too as well as brothers and sisters by choice.

And why were you fighting all the time, if you believed in peace.

Richie said...

you people are funny!! Living on the street and wanting peace sometimes means carrying the bigger stick, irregardless of whatever or however you think peace is and comes about...there are alot of dead brothers and sisters out there who wanted peace..and alot of live ones too..who sometimes had to be involved with head knockings in the meantime..and truthfully, the booze didn't always help, or the reds, etc. and the heroin scene really puts a damper on the idealism that came after the "mind" scene. I continued psychedelics onward until the early nineties, but the revelations stopped coming twenty some years before that, after that it was only fun, or boredom, and yes Cecil, thankfully not all "evangelism" was wasted, I for one believe in the Lord...though it took a lot of hard ass knocks to finally come around. I.R.

....and Yes, I believe in peace, but a man made peace would only happen in a totalitarian society where if you disagree with those in charge I.E."The "POLITICALLY CORRECT"........you know the rest.

WERE YOU LIKE A PARA-MILITARY FAMILY OR SOMETHING AND YOU DRANK AND DRUGGED TO DEADEN THE SHAME AND INDIGNITY OF HAVING TO FIGHT FOR PEACE AND LOVE WHILE THE MAIN STREAM MILITARY WAS OVERSEAS FIGHTING FOR WHAT MOST OF US WOULD THINK OF AS THE REAL WAR AND i MIGHT MENTION SMOKING A LOT OF THAT VIETNAMEESE GREEN TOO GIVE THEM THE COURAGE THEY NEEDED TO FIGHT THE REAL ONE.

to "Brave" anonymous...No you don't understand the realities of the street, it wasn't pretty, most of us were not trained for battle, but found ourselves in some pretty heavy shit anyway. I've been shot,(twice) shot at numerous times, stabbed I can't remember how many times, OD'd,ID'd, and STP'd, and not all of us made it out either... and yes we hung together because it was a trial by fire, that did make us close, and we sure did fight amongst ourselves, but we took care of our "problems" too. And for your info we have more than a few "COMBAT" vets in the family, even buried at Arlington, so put that in whatever you suck on and smoke it!!!!

itchy,
I sorry, but I thought you might see things the way I do now. When Jax did that thing with the lawn mower to OJ (RIP), I was under the impression that I was the first one he told about it when he got back to the street. I was dissillusioned to the max, as u can imagine. Never the less, I heard recently that Jax and OJ remained friends until the end.

I was only being facetious when I mentioned that thing about the para military force and I'm really sorry for the shit u went thru, especially knowing that fighting was the last thing u wanted to be doing.

A lot of hippies started wearing military fatigues towards the end of the whole thing and someone, also recently, told me that they did that bc the fatigues were cheap and hippies didn't have much money. that was part of it for sure, but another part of it was that they did it to show their solidarity with American soldiers in Vietnam. Although I was against the war, a lot of those soldiers could have been men who were once my next door neighbors, guys I grew up with and went to school with, frineds. One of them was as a matter of fact. He was the brother of my first girlfriend when I was in the 6th grade. He drove over a land mine in a truck and lost his leg.

peace out,
bro'

Yep we did take our knocks!!!

I lost my front teeth with Greg on the upper raod past nederlands when a P.U. Truck of cowboy viges came after me and Greg.

Greg got stabbed with a big tree limb in PV by a "HIPPIE" just because the HIPPY CHICKS liked the ruff and tumble guys!! Well how cool was that the dude was a punk and the Valley was cleared out after that by family!!

As for STP what does it all stand for... "Shitty Toilit People" was what some called us so if that was what they wanted to see we oblidged. Maybe we sometimes acted quckly to things where we could have done different BUT living on the streets by 1970 and 71 was not an easy thing anymore in most places! You hung with the folks who protected you and you protected them and yes sometimes there were disagreements. BUT if word got out that a Brother or Sister was being Hassled we would show up in force to grab and go!

Itchy were you ever up on the Ridge?

Didn't NY John want SPACE to live TIME to enjoy life and PEOPLE to care about each other! STP!!!!

But John was stabbed by the College punks at a frat party and that went with him as he died!

So.........if you tryly think STP was to mean you did the DRUG STP that is not true as that was not what it was about and there were some/many of the Family who I knew at the time (70-74) who did not do STP but did many other things! Taking care of each other was more important than many here seem to talk about. The SYSTEM wanted us off the Streets and we were more extream looking than most so we were hit more than regular HIPPIE kids or Collage Kids when the LDs wanted to clean up the Streets. When Chastain would cruise the Hill on A FRIDAY he would TRY to get us off the hill into the Boulder Grey Box all the time!! And he would always try to have even our DOGS taken away!! But I digress

Today I say BLESS ALL who made it to now!!

Stryder, Trip, Ritchie, Patti, anyone, everyone...

4 years ago I didn't expect *anyone* to respond to this post - it was just kind of a nostalgic whine on my part. And then you all show up for the party! Thank you!

More 'bout me: I came to Boulder in early June '70 and left when August was starting to get chilly in the canyons. I was recently "experienced" and damned naive. A punk-ass little hippie if I may say so. I had a trombone and a sleeping bag - not much else. I spent most of my time on the hill dealing and scrounging and panhandling, and would head up to the canyon to camp if the cops were running people out of the parks or back yards... they always did. Hadn't heard about STP family in St. Louis where I came from. Once I got to the hill and started figuring out who's who and what's what, the family came up as people you needed to know about, and might need to know.

I was hanging with two gals - one from my high school back home - "Glo" and Sunshine. Tried and tried to find Glo after she went to Taos and I headed to KC - for years - saw her obituary 4 years ago online. I really wanted to see her again. Who knows? Maybe I will.

STP family practically saved my life several times when I was in the midst of some deals going down wrong. And once the family had guns drawn on me thinking I was a narc 'cause I was where I shouldn't have been, dealing in shit I shouldn't have been. That was a defining moment in my life - realizing my simplistic world view was about to encounter life-and-death reality - and that their are always dues that must be paid.

I remember the dogs being grabbed by the cops. I distinctly remember talking to several family up on the hill that night. I remember scurrying from locals (or cops?) up in the canyon in the dead of night a time or two that summer.

I think I was close to dying or being killed several times that summer, and I accumulated quite a bit of baggage from the whole experience, I'm sure. But it was my life and mostly it was magic and I learned things I was supposed to learn. And I would never change that path I took.

We were there. I hope you all are as happy as I am to share this.

He had a small dog named "Karma". The dog was small framed, brownish-grey with some white areas. Marlene and I were wondering about him. He'd sometime come and work with us at the Food Project. So...a "long-shot" at best but ya never know...

Spent a lot of time in Boulder and up in the mountains outside of Nederland in '69, knew a bunch of the STP family folks, esp. Deputy Dawg (and more about his demise). Danced as near naked as the law allowed in the People's Park, stood in the rain with about 25 folks I din't know and sang the chorus from "Hey Jude" for about 20 minutes one blessed afternoon...
Does anyone remember the name of the little cafe we all went to?

I used to come up from the burbs in jersey on weekends to catch the bands in the Philmore.

I remember some of u guys. There was this one dude who used to sit on a little stoop at the side of the Philmore East and listen to the concerts from there. He said he loved listening to the music but he rarely had enough money to get in to see the bands.

Then there was this other guy who was panhandling on the corner of second ave and 8th street one time. He said he needed money to buy a script for penacillan because he had pneumonia.

This black dude I was acquainted with got his arm broken by some I-talians, he said. I guess bc he poked his nose a little too far into their bussiness.

One guy I remember in particular and I was wondering if anyone else knew him or if he was with the family. He called himself by some majicians name, I think he said his name was Gandolf. He said he made his own LSD and often times gave it out for free to anyone who wanted it. He gave me a hit one time.

Do u remember Gandolf. If u do,is there any way he could come on here and say something?

Anyone recall a place near Tucson called Thurber Courts? Got pretty notorious 'til someone was killed. I don't know what happened after that, 'cause I moved on. They got the asshole that did it - he didn't even live there, neither did the victim. My brother was there - his street name was genius. I was stryder. People used to dumpster dive and then cook up a huge pot of vegetable soup in a bucket. Lotta wine got drank there. A whole lot, pretty much round the clock. Ah, the bad old days.

I haven't heard anything about Gandalf for years. What your talking about sounds like '69 or '70. When were you there?
Me and Zap used to drink on that stoop during shows.Somtimes when the first show let out those side doors Fat Joe,one of Graham's bouncers, would let us in. We drank beer with him at hungry charlys on sundays.
By then I was usually too drunk to know who was playing tho.
Alot of people knew about that door.If you put your back against it you could hear the music. Also, when people lined up to go in it was good panhandling. You could get a good buzz from what people consumed in line too.Of course, the bouncers would roust bums but if you were incognito and stayed near the back you did pretty good.

Stryder said...

Hell that's probably true about me and Crackerjack (I know him but he doesn't know me). I "met" him (you if it's Crackerjack that's reading this) in Jackson Square. He (or you) and Clyde were already flat out drunk on good ol' red port but I still had a ways to go. Facing the river we were on a bench to the right of the central fountain. Funny how certain things stick in your brain. God only knows where they or I ended up. Unfortunately quite a few times for me it was central lockup. And once Parrish Prison. I didn't get into violent trouble though. Came damned close but more often than not I was kind of a peacemaker. I remember taking a knife from a guy (I think it was Buck the Fuck) (yeah, it was a buck knife) when he was getting into a fight at Thurber Courts outside of Tucson. It wasn't a particularly brave move - he was so drunk you could have knocked him over with a feather. But I had my alcohol-fueled asshole side too.

We did occasionally drink other "wine that's never seen a grape" in New Orleans like Wild Irish (I understand Stinkin' Linkin was partial to that). Out west and up in new york we tended to stick with RP though. In DC too. There was a pretty thriving street scene in the day in Georgetown but not a whole lot of STP Family. In fact I never saw any there and I was in Georgetown "living off the fat of the land" for a long time. Of course now everyone is walking Georgetown around looking like young republicans. Sigh.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm sober now, have been for a while. I'd probably be pushing up daisies by now if I wasn't.

Anyway that's all for now.

Peace.

I know the school yard, Crackerjack. In G'town we used to call places to drink "offices" so we'd go to the schoolyard office, or the twilight zone office (a ledge above the canal that's gone now thanks to new construction), or the rooftop office. We could go there and drink ourselves into oblivion without being bothered. A friend of mine was Smokey, who was supposedly a vietnam vet and got a disability check once a month, so we used to have "check parties." He was found dead in his sleeping bag under Key Bridge, though I don't know what the circumstances were. I was sober by the time that happened. Poor Smoky, he was a great guy. Shit, I think I need to close my office door - I might start bawling.

I want to mention that one STP family guy I knew in berzerkely and actually partnered with - we panhandled together and crashed in a vacant lot - was Spooky. He's the one guy I recognize from the book "Telegraph at 3AM." He had a scraggly beard and carried his bed roll around everywhere. He had a British accent and every other word out of mouth was fuuuuuuuck. He supposedly had syphilis, and the doctor at the free clinic told him to get cured he'd have to stop drinking long enough for the penicilin to kick in and he refused. We may have been sick mother fuckers but we did it with style.

Jesus. Wild memories. I used to tell these kinds of stories to friends but I've since decided that they don't really understand what was going on back then. It's so great to have somewhere to post this stuff.

More stories please.

¤Påttï§tårz¤ said...

Poor Spooky...On the steps of the Tucson apartment, he'd share with me his "Woes" about having Syphillis and how he'd never get a girlfriend...gads!!! What a guy!!! I adored him...especially the time he'd spend with my son, Julian. Both Kenny RP and Spooky would play baseball with him, sometimes all day. No matter how wasted they may have gotten, they were always careful, safe and protective of my son...he was 2-3 years old then. It is those times I remember with such affection. (Sorry to sound corny...mushy) but that meant alot to me. ahhhhh man have the years gone by.

Memories are coming back a lot, hope you don't mind an avalanche.

I'm not bragging here. I know I was NOT hardcore compared to a LOT of people and in fact wasn't even STP family though there were prolonged periods where I had the (sometimes dubious) privilege of hanging out with them.

But I was thinking about in Berzerkeley there was a guy we called Donald Duck. He was almost too perfect - wore a blue jean cap cocked just so, and colors with indian head nickel conchos running down the side and perfectly imperfect, if you know what I mean, patches. A good guy. Boy could that dude panhandle. I was no slouch myself. We'd split up to canvas the area, and set a time to regroup, like a half hour or something. A few times we ended up with a case of bumpers of Rainier Ale and a couple of fifths of jack black. We'd get a couple of loaves of bread and some cans of Jack Mackerel. I recall once spreading out newspaper on the sidewalk by a supermarket and dumping cans of JM on it and having a feast.

Seriously though I've been thinking about documenting this stuff - even got a little tape recorder to carry around once. But I'm bored with my own story and never even got past the first paragraph. This is something else though. Thanks, Cecil, for putting this page up.

More later.

I remember in New Orleans when Clyde had a "pet" rope. It was one of those huge ropes that they use to tie off big ships to the dock. He found it down by the levee somewhere. He dragged it all the way back to our room down decatur street. He kept it like a pet.---CJ

I stayed at the Eltro Hotel on Decatur for a while. We had a sign on our door that said "Home of the Freeborn Fuckups." Dallas Alice stayed there, as well as Roach (aka Zig Zag 'cause he looked like the Zig Zag man - a particularly insane but fun individual) and a few others whose names escape me. One guy had a business making leather sex toys - me was crazy too. Used to walk around the dark alleys with cash sticking out of his pocket acting drunk and if someone tried to roll him he'd fight them (or so he said/I remember). And a Spanish guy we called Little Brother (there were little brothers and sisters all over the place) who was really short and had really long hair. He burned his ass bad when he sat on a space heater drunk. We used to drink on the roof. We got the hotel manager drunk and someone snuck into his office and doctored his books so it looked like we'd payed for the week. Strange drugs would show up periodically including once a vial of pure adrenalin and a bunch of nembutols. It all went to hell when some ghetto bros from Algiers across the river payed us a late night visit with clubs and guns. That was definitely one of the low low low points of my life.

Stryder said...

Richie and Crackerjack, wow I didn't know so many people stayed at the Eltro. It was pretty great. Wish Clyde had been there when the Algiers gang visited us. There were a number of cheap hobo friendly places to eat in NO as I recall. The one I went to most was Buster Holmes. When I first went there, for $.40 (that's right 40 cents) you could get a huge plate of rice topped with red beans (I think it was $.75 if you wanted some fat back in there) and slabs of good french bread and butter and a bottle of cold water. And I think it was 75 cents for a bumper of beer (usually Dixie). Then there was the Hummingbird, where Mick Jagger used to go when he was in town (or so I heard) 'cause no one gave a shit who he was. And there was a Mexican all you can eat buffet we'd go to after selling plasma or working for a day at one of the myriad day labor places around Canal Street. How can these be good memories? But they are.

Oh yeah and For Madmen Only, run by Summer Moon and Reverend Doctor General Crazy Horse who was a sword swallower and fire eater. I worked for them for a few weeks delivering food around the quarter. They shut the place down and split town still owing me a paycheck. There was a bar connected to it but I can't remember the name. It was close to Buster Holmes, which was in the center of the quarter, right at the intersection of Orleans and Burgundy.

Buster Holmes was a good guy.I asked the cook if I could have some bones left over from the bean pot for my dog.One of the old ladies behind the counter said no,we don't do that.A little later Buster dragged the garbage bucket(A big drum) out side and told me to help myself. One day about five of us were bummin outside but not doin so good so Buster came out and told us to come in and eat on him.
Another time Clyde went up to the counter and asked for an egg sandwich. The lady said she didn't have any eggs. Clyde went out and bought a dozen eggs and brought it back. She made him and me a couple really kickass egg sandwiches on the bread they served with the beans.Over easy, drippy covered with ketchup and a couple drops of liquid sunshine with a cold bottle of water.YUM---CJ

jax,
how serious are you about the fact that you call yourselves a family. For instance: are your bonds as strong as the bonds in your genetic family. If you had to make a choice between your own family and the STP family, would you be able too.

sorry, I can't go away even if I am bothering you, because I am family whether you accept me or not. Do you see what I am trying to say to you.

When you are part of a family, whether or not you are seperated from your family, even if another person in the family doesn't want anything to do with you, never wants to talk to you or see you again, even if the whole rest of the family feels the same way about you, the genetic bond can not be broken and u are always part of the family.

If you are that serious about the bonds you have between your brothers and sisters in the STP family, then I am family and I always will be family.

Can u accept that?!?

crackerjack said...

Family is family, blood, non blood.Makes no difference. You talk alot but who are you? Why are you hiding your identity?Where did we meet?Who did you hang out with? When? Are you someone's kid?---CJ

Stryder said...

Back in those days everyone was calling each other brothers and sisters, not just actual genetic family. And people who banded together for a cause sometimes called themselves family. It's not the same as blood family, but in some instances it can be stronger. But it's not something that's based on someone just deciding, or having hung with someone for a while. It comes from sharing serious experiences that effect your life. And if you've experienced that then you have that and no one can take it away from you. You don't have to explain yourself or anything. Just hang out. Relax. Tell stories. Or not. Whatever.

Peace.

Tripping in People's Park. Met up with a guy named zap (there were probably hundreds of zaps) and we went to the student union and played with the soap dispensers in the mens' bathroom. Security didn't know what to do with us so the campus cops put is in the slammer. The place was being renovated and they apologized for the mess! Ended up in a cell with a bunch of other bug eyed freaks. Next morning, after a nice hot breakfast, they cut us loose. I headed back to the park, and my brother was hanging under a tree with 4 of the strangest people I'd ever seen. Really dirty leather patch pants, vests, boots, and a lot of jibber jabber. 3 of them were a family, a man, woman and baby. The other guy was named Rufus the Family Dog. Through them me and Don (my bro aka genius) found our way to the house on telegraph on the border of Berkeley and Oakland. What happened there was another story.

Some days later, hanging out in the park across from city hall, drinking Ranier Ale. A middle class-ish black family was having a nice picnic nearby. I got an inspiration - I went over to the family and asked if they had a knife or razor blade I could borrow. The husband looked suspicious and hostile 'til I told him what I wanted it for. So he loaned me something sharp - I don't remember what it was. I was thinking a box cutter, but what would he be doing with that? Anyway, so I walked over to the flagpole in front of city hall and cut the flag down. Broad frickin' daylight. Stuffed it under my shirt and took it back to the STP house on Telegraph and hung it up on the wall.

WHOELSE-ANONYMOUS...Whoever ask about the "Family Ties...Bonds"
First I will show you how this all went down. I had a very nice Wedding Album of Wabs and my wedding...also Reunion pics, which I do not have anymore due to VERY unfortunate circumstances.I really would LOVE to have those pictures, So...I got on "Google" and typed in STP Family, thinking there may be pics there that we had put on the net a few years back after the Reunion. *POOF* it lead me to "Living On The Ground",which had comments about STP...Being that I had a STP Family Reunion at my house and a Wedding I thought..."Hey..I'll share this with Cecil...then Came Richie, we wrote for awhile and then CJ. SO...that's the part I know. I DO HOPE it keeps low key tho...other sites became...well...what would I say that matters. I commented on it a few steps back ago.
My Family connection came about when I was 17. My home life was abusive, violent and brutal. I left in my van for parts unknown (which was Boulder) and this is where I met Little Bear, Mangy John and Muskrat. We hung out and partied. I had my issues with life but with STP it didn't seem to matter. For the most part...strong friendships came about. I needed a "Family" and I found one...back then. At that time and thru time the lessons I learned from all of it made me a Mom...Nurse...Homemaker, a good person. Some STP'ers were there with me and for me...some got lost in the haze but it was those family values I learned from. It was good at one time...
This I do know...Family should be there when things get tough...when they are this will tell you the truth.

Cecil X. Nixxon said...

Well said, Patti. I was 18 when I arrived in Boulder in June 1970. I started this blog as a shout out into the wilderness not expecting anyone would comment or even understand. It turned out much different - although it took a few years of "incubation" until we gathered a crowd.

The way I see it, if you consider yourself STP family, welcome. If you knew them/hung with them like I did, welcome. If you're just lurking and reading, that's fine - but since this has turned into a virtual street corner, please understand most of us here have some aching memories and there's just no place we can go to share without someone trying to "make sport" of the discussion.

And family? phamily? What makes STP family and others like them have strong bonds that persist for decades are the experiences, the banding-together for mutual survival and comfort. Everyone deserves that comforting hearth, whether it's a virtual street corner or a flesh-and-blood family. Now that our nation community is divided like no other time since the late 60's I think it's natural to hearken back to extended/symbolic family building. Rather than trip on how many times we might have OD'ed or been shot, I think it's a better use of our energy to rejoice that we are still here, and honor the family bonds that got us through.

Sermon's over - coffee and cookies in the church basement. Cannabis cookies, woo hoo!

The passion to make the Reunion work paid off...it was awesome. The Wedding was beautiful...I was never so happy in my life. IF you saw the pics you'd see Wab was too. A BIG part everyone played in my life was after I had Julian. The Bro's I partied with turned into nuturing, loving mentors to my son. OK...I don't get this AT ALL. WE...The Elders STP are here JUST to share THE STORY. Nothing else nothing more. You seem angry...perhaps an incident back then. What is it??? Also I see you "represent" Cecil and Cecil never backs you up. Nobody said Cecil wasn't there nor insult him in anyway. Ya know...a couple of sites were created after the Reunion for purposes of keeping in touch. Because there was "A Troll" that felt she had a connection with us it caused conflict, hurt and misrepresentation. She would insult..degrade...
put-down...invade...and represent herself as "Speaker" for The Family. It was disgusting what she did and those that followed her in the quest to...geeeez...just have the feeling of accomplishment that she DAMAGED one of us...maybe two...even three. So would you just stop and let it go. ALL of our lives have changed, many challeneges have been conquered. With that I say...it is the past we remember and KNOW we survived some of the most dangerous/insane situations. Sure...we could just go away but ya know I am not gonna do that. With Cecils respect and welcoming the stories will continue. This will be the last time I will respond to whatever you're getting at. If there is a specific reason...get it out. Talkin about New york reminded me of a story. In case anyone was wondering, this is where OJ came from.
In the winter the Streets get pretty hard. To warm up you have to improvise.Me and Zap would go into boiler rooms to sleep sometimes and sometimes it was the only warm place to drink. One time we went into a boiler room and there was a guy sittin there. He sat in the same place for hours, not doing anything. Just sitting. After awhile I asked him what he was doing. He said he was waiting for somebody. When we headed out to get up another jug we asked him if he wanted to drink some gin with us. So he started hangin with us all the time. Bummin and drinkin. He held his own as far as gettin up change for the jug but his priorities were out of wack.First change in the mornin always goes for the wake-up. He had this bad habit of takin his first good hit and buyin Orange Juice,so we called him OJ.Now you know.---CJ

Well said Patti. That showed a lot of wisdom and tact.

I for one wouldn't be alive today if I'd continued the way I was going.

My girlfriend Quicksilver gave me my name back around '71 or so. I spelled it with a "y" 'cause I didn't remember how to spell it from reading Lord of the Rings.

That's interesting Ritchie. I never did have kids. Went through a few girlfriends but didn't find the love of my life 'til I was 45 (and she 43). So we're just growing old together, saving so some day maybe we can retire (assuming our savings aren't plundered again by wall street thieves) and spoiling the nieces and nephews.

I've retained some bad habits, but shook off (with lots of help) the ones that were keeping me on the street. In the beginning, around 1970, it was all a big party and adventure, but near the end (10/70/1980 to be exact) I was ready to clean up my act.

Never knew OJ, CJ. Sounds like he and I would have gotten along just fine though.

One more quick memory. I knew a guy named Moon, and hung with him in a couple of different cities, NO for sure, and I think Tucson. He was a big American Indian guy, quiet, long hair, awesome colors. Carried around a newspaper clipping about the battle of Wounded Knee with a photo of him and others holding rifles.

One day he and I were trying to hustle up a jug in New Orleans. We waded into a fountain and started fishing out the change. A couple of clean-cut young women came walking by and one of them said "Ooo, that's TACKY!"

I'd like to say Moon and I had a great laugh at this, but unfortunately I hadn't woken up that morning with enough change for a wakeup, so I wasn't feeling so hot.

I for one am hoping this thread continues on.

I hitchhiked through Texas once with Moon,Clyde, and another big guy,Fred Flintstone.Fred actually resembled the cartoon character. The four of us didn't get alot of rides but the ones we got were good rides.Houston cops gave us a ration of shit and made us walk through town. They told Flintstone he looked like he just lost his motorcycle. They asked Moon if he came from Cracked Elbow and told me and Clyde we looked like refugees from a POW camp. You know it's a long walk through Houston.
Stryder was that fountain in a sort of inner courtyard belonging to an oriental restaurant? That particular fountain was loaded with coins.Had to be hundreds of dollars worth.I hit it a couple times but they watched it close.I don't like the House of D so I avoided it mostly. ---CJ

Did you know Zap when he used to come down St Marks Place with furs hanging from his belt. That was a year before I knew either of you, but I remembered him when I did get to know him.

By the way, I know how much you drank, but how come none of you smoked too much pot (not saying I did), just asking.

I met Zaps brother on the street one time too, and as a matter of fact, your sister too.

Did you ever crash in the loft? I went there one time to buy some pot. This guy who called himself STP Billy sold it to me. Rumor had it that Billy was a drop out from MIT.

Typical hippie, if you subscribe to the notion that hippies were an invention of the mass media.

Do you?

Just in case you don't remember, just about the entire world is at war now. I'd like to be part of the new establishment, but I just can't if the new establishment is the same as the old one.

I know this is extrememly sarcastic but if you remember the rock group, "The Who," I don't know what song it was from but maybe someone could put the lyrics that are filtering into my head right now into some sort of perspective or context, what ever:

I just thought of a neat story. The day Magnolia Thunderpussy's dosed the hill. I was in Boulder and I walked down the hill.In a parking lot at the bottom was a little restaurant that served great breakfasts. They also had a deep chocolate fudge cake that was very nice. This day in particular I noticed people everywhere buzzing around.I went to the restaurant(Magnolia's)and Robin from KC was hangin out front tripping on a scab she had on her knee and laughing.I went inside and little brother was sitting at the bar. He was the only sane person in there.People were bouncing off the walls the energy level was so high in there. So I sat next to little brother and someone gave me a piece of Mothers Chocolate Fudge cake.I don't remember when it hit me but I found out later that someone donated a bunch of something that went in the cake.I don't know how much there was but they were giving away cake for hours. Boulder rocked that night.---CJ

Itchy,Patti,
Is there any way that anyone but a select few can be included in your family.Exactly what is so horrible about what I am saying. Are you insulted by the word peace or are you insulted by peace itself.

I did some drugs in my time, too. a little LSD and one hit of STP, early on, but mostly pot after that. Never had a thirst for alchohol all that much. I saw as much as I wanted to see on the hallucinogens and then I quit them and just smoked pot for many years after that. You remember it one way and I remember it another. I don't recall anyone that I knew on the street smoking too much pot and certainly not popping too many hallucinogens on a very frequent basis. Life on the street was very tough. I was homeless for 9 months. I had lice in my hair and at times I was so filthy from the soot or smog in the city that my skin was nearly black.

however, peace was always more important to me then drugs and love was more important then anything, but you can't have love without peace and I still want both of them, and drugs don't do it for me anymore.

I loved them when I took them and never considered myelf an addict, still don't. They were my life style even though I didn't do them very heavy compared to a lot of others.

As far as fighting goes, Itchy, I still hate to fight and I've done more of that then I ever wanted too. One fight is one too many for me. I see it a little differently then you, though. To me, if you are a peace loving individual and you are the better qualified peace then anyone else, then if someone threatens you, you have to fight back because first of all you have to keep yourself alive and second of all you have to keep yourself healthy because if you don't no one else is left that can do as good a job as you to keep the peace or bring peace about.

Patti, do you ever give anyone a chance to say anything before you start ripping them apart. I'm not youir enemy. I'm not trying to hurt you. I'd rather not hurt anyone, sometimes even when I "do" have to. Please stop ripping me apart for everything that comes out of my mouth. Are you perhaps angry at "me" for some reason that I don't know about.

What is so terrible about knowing some one without them knowing you. I knew some of you and I didn't forget you but you don't remember me, I wish you did remember me. I thought we had some very strong bonds between us. I guess the bond was just strong with regard to me to you and not you to me. I made a mistake and it is painful to realize after all these years that I meant nothing at all to any of you in so far as there isn't even one of you that even remembers me. What is so creepy any mysterious about that?

If you really want me to split, I will because I don't need to be cut up for everything I say and believe in, even when it is the same as what you say and believe in.

Give me the word and I am gone. I won't hang around or "bother" you anymore!

I don't need to hang with people who once fought against the establishment and are now proud to be part of it and at the same time are now going to condemn other people (me) for not being part of it yet.

cheow,
for now.

Why ask me to reveal myself when you already know who I am and can find out anything you want about me via the internet.

Yes patti, ee gads you are that mean and at this point I would like to rid myself of people who prefer to find out about each other behind each others backs on the internet then give each other a chance thru personal contact.

The new establishment you call yourselves hah, then kiss an internet geek for me, I'd still rather you kissed a cop, even if you kissed a cop instead of me.

peace and love, just the same to so called hippies who don't even believe in peace and love anymore, or maybe they never did believe in peace and love in the first place, it was just drugs, that was the whole thing for you.

By the way, were you the only hippie family that grew up on the lower east side, since you have so much trouble remembering anyone that wasn't in "your" family, I don't guess you would remember anyone from another family!

Why don't we just chalk this up to a family feud and leave it at that!!!

This is like taking a beating and coming back for more, but I can settle down if you like.

You want to hear a funny story, well it's not exactly funny and there is not much too it, but one time when I was sitting on one of the stoops on St Marks place, none other then Abbie Hoffman sits down on the same stoop almost right next to me. He was with a friend and this guy says to him: "what's that guy into." There were some other people sitting on the door stoop too, but to this day, I am convinced that the guy was asking Abbie about me, even though he did not point at me and there was no indication of any kind what so ever that he "was" talking about me. Abbies reply was: "mystical fascism."

By the way Abbie Hoffman is dead. He took an over dose of perscription medication. It was many years ago and I think he was living in Bucks County, PA when he died.

Time for a lil' humor...

A group of 40 year old guys discuss where they should meet for dinner. Finally they agree to meet at the Kelley's Restaurant because the waitresses have low cut blouses and nice breasts.

10 years later at age 50, the group agrees to meet at Kelley's because the food is good and the wine selection is excellent.

10 years later at age 60, the group agrees to meet at Kelley's because they can eat there in peace and quiet and the restaurant is smoke free.

10 years later at age 70, the group agrees to meet at Kelley's because the restaurant is wheel chair accessible and they have an elevator.

10 years later at age 80, the group agrees to meet at Kelley's because they have never been there before

Who are these "elders" that the joke was intended for.Us young-uns want to know.---CJ

noname said...

speaking of elders, I was just thinking of this the other day. correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the notion of elders come from native americans. where ever it does come from, my idea of it is that if you get to a certain point in years, chronologically, that you are endowed with respect from those who are younger then you and those who are the same age as you, too.

is this automatic though, kinda like citizenship, if you are born in America (the United States) u are automatically a citizen without having to do anything else at all and so if you reach a certain age in a Native American tribe or for intance a hippie tribe/family you are an elder automatically and entitled to the respect of your tribe.

I already know that Jax is younger then me (just a little bit)so since I don't know how old you are, Patti, would care to divulge your age.

keep in mind, I'm a little backwards or out of the loop might be a better way of putting it, but it is your perrogative whether you want to tell or not.

You have your whole life "ahead" of you not to mention the whole editorial board of the most prestigious liberal rag in the country "behind" you. I'm just some low life hippie.

We all have our moments, Itcy but you must realize that it is only a moment you are having, what you are having is called a hippie moment. Let it go or it could turn into senility or worse yet, early onset alsheimers Then you will really need some help. Even Uncle Cecil won't be able to do anything for you then.

You really don't remember Casey, the red head upstairs from me, the one I liked... and you forgot jax's sister, too, the one that had that name that to me sounded Greek. You made it with her in my back room and you don't even remember her. No wonder you are so angry. You have a right to be that angry.
